- WhatsApp usernames are handles (like @asterbeauty) that identify a business without exposing the number; Meta is rolling them out through 2025 and 2026
- Rules: unique, letters, numbers, periods and underscores, no impersonation, matching your display name or brand, within Meta's length limits
- Good usernames are short, brand-first, and consistent with Instagram; add the city only when the brand is generic
- 100 ideas across salons, clinics, restaurants, retail, real estate, education, fitness, travel, services and D2C, plus a checker
A WhatsApp username is the handle customers will use to find your business without typing a number: @asterbeauty rather than +91 98765 43210. Meta is rolling usernames out through 2025 and 2026, and the good ones will go quickly. This guide gives Meta's rules, a method for choosing, and 100 ideas across ten industries, with the reasoning so you can adapt them. Check availability with the username checker before you fall in love with one.
The rules
- Unique across WhatsApp; first come, first served.
- Letters, numbers, periods and underscores; no spaces or special characters; case is not significant.
- No impersonation of brands, public figures or WhatsApp itself; no misleading claims (official, verified).
- Consistent with your display name and verified business; a mismatch draws review.
- Within Meta's length limits (short enough to say aloud is the practical test).
- Changeable, but not often; old links and printed materials break when you change it.
How to choose
- Brand first. The brand name alone is best: @asterbeauty, @rudraseo.
- Match Instagram. If your Instagram handle is free on WhatsApp, take it; customers already know it.
- Add a qualifier only if the brand is generic. @sunrisebakery_pune beats @sunrisebakery when there are twenty Sunrise Bakeries.
- Avoid numbers and underscores where you can. They are hard to say and easy to mistype; use them only to resolve a clash.
- Say it aloud, print it, and picture it on a hoarding. If it needs explaining, shorten it.
- Claim the obvious variants if your brand is valuable and Meta allows multiple numbers with usernames.

Every entry here is an idea, not a claim of availability; check before deciding.
Checking availability without guesswork
Meta's username rollout is progressive, so a name that is free today may be claimed tomorrow by an account that receives the feature earlier. Check your first three choices in the username checker, then check the same handles on Instagram, Facebook and as a domain, because a brand that reads the same everywhere is easier for customers to trust and for search engines to connect. If your first choice is taken on WhatsApp but free elsewhere, consider whether the WhatsApp variant with a period or a city qualifier is acceptable across all of them, and adopt it everywhere at once.
Usernames and the display name
The display name is the business name Meta reviews and shows in the chat header; the username is the handle. They should agree: a display name "Aster Beauty Studio" with username @asterbeauty reads as one brand, while @deals4u under that display name looks like a mismatch and can draw review. Change the display name first if it is outdated, since it is reviewed, then claim the username that matches it.
Protecting the name
Once claimed, put the username on every surface where the number appears: the website header, Instagram bio, Google Business Profile, invoices, packaging and hoardings. A customer who sees @asterbeauty on a bill and finds it on WhatsApp has no reason to doubt an impersonator; the more consistently the handle appears, the harder it is for a fake account to trade on your name. Report impersonating usernames to Meta from the profile they appear on.
Ten more for two-wheeler and auto dealers
@ridehub, @motoworld, @thebikestore, @autolane, @wheelsandco, @cityautos, @scootstation, @torquegarage, @driveline, @gearupmotors
Patterns that work
- Brand plus category when the brand is one word: @aster.beauty, @apex.academy.
- Brand plus city when the brand is common: @sunrisebakery.pune.
- Verb plus brand for services: @bookaster, @callquickfix.
- Avoid: numbers that look like years, double underscores, abbreviations customers will not know, and anything that reads as another brand.

What to do if your brand name is taken
Try the brand with a category word (@aster.beauty), the brand with the city (@aster.pune), or the brand with a short suffix that customers already associate with you (@asterstudio). Avoid adding "official", "the" or numbers unless they are part of the brand, and avoid look-alike spellings of a competitor's handle, which Meta treats as impersonation. If a squatter holds your registered trademark as a username, report it through the profile with your trademark details; Meta's impersonation policy covers usernames.
Claiming it
Where Meta has enabled usernames for your number, VGraple CRM's channel settings show the claim option with an availability check; the username help article walks through it and the username feature page explains eligibility. Once claimed, put the username on the website, Instagram bio, bills and hoardings alongside the QR code, and keep the display name consistent so the profile reads as one brand.
One habit worth adopting before you claim: search the handle on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Google in the same sitting, and read the first page of results as a customer would. If another business, a person or a product already owns the name in your city, the confusion will cost more than a slightly longer handle, and a distinctive name with a city or category qualifier will serve the brand better for years.
